Eliminating Household Toxins in the Kitchen

By Viki Garbett

Attending a seminar on environmental toxins was a turning point — I was genuinely surprised by how many everyday household items contain potentially harmful substances. The kitchen, where we spend so much time preparing nourishing food, can sometimes work against us if we’re not aware of what’s in it.

The good news is that making your kitchen healthier doesn’t require throwing everything out at once. Small, gradual swaps make a real difference over time.

Non-stick cookware

Traditional non-stick pans coated with PTFE (Teflon) can release toxic fumes when overheated. Consider switching to cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic-coated cookware — all of which are durable, easy to cook with, and free of concerning coatings.

Plastic food storage

Plastic containers — especially when heated in a microwave — can leach BPA and other chemicals into food. Swap to glass, stainless steel, or BPA-free containers for storing and reheating food.

Cleaning products

Many conventional kitchen cleaners contain harsh chemicals including bleach, ammonia, and synthetic fragrances. Simple alternatives like white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and diluted castile soap clean effectively without the chemical load.

Food wraps

Standard cling film contains plasticisers that can migrate into food, particularly fatty foods. Beeswax wraps, reusable silicone covers, or simply a plate over a bowl are effective, toxin-free alternatives.

Air fresheners and candles

Many synthetic air fresheners and paraffin candles release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Opt for natural beeswax or soy candles, essential oil diffusers, or simply open a window.

Making your kitchen a cleaner, healthier space is one of the most powerful things you can do for your family’s long-term wellbeing. Start with one swap this week — and build from there.
