My Hay fever first aid kit

By Viki Garbett

This article shares dietary and lifestyle strategies to ease hay fever symptoms alongside medical treatment. These are complementary approaches — not replacements for GP-prescribed medication.

1. Reduce Inflammation

Omega 3 — Aim for oily fish 2–3 times per week (salmon, mackerel, herring, trout). Plant-based options include chia seeds, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds. Adults may consider supplementing with 750mg EPA and 250mg DHA daily.

Cooking oil — Swap vegetable oils for olive oil. Vegetable oils contain excess omega-6, which triggers inflammatory responses.

2. Boost Your Immune System

Vitamin C — Consume berries and vegetables like spinach and broccoli. Vitamin C can interact with mast cells to reduce histamine release in the body.

Probiotics — Emerging research suggests fermented foods may help reduce asthma and hay fever symptoms.

3. Dietary Changes

Low-histamine foods — Favour fresh foods, eggs, and fresh herbs. Boiling and poaching produce lower histamine levels than frying or grilling.

Natural antihistamines — Red onions, apples, and cabbage contain quercetin. Pineapple contains bromelain with potent anti-inflammatory properties.

Herbal teas — Nettle tea helps block histamine production and release. Chamomile and green tea offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.

Local honey — Taking a teaspoon daily may build tolerance through gradual pollen exposure over the season.

4. Lifestyle Changes

  • Avoid smoky environments
  • Improve sleep hygiene — chamomile tea, light yoga, reading before bed
  • Wash hair daily to remove pollen
  • Dry clothes indoors during high pollen periods
  • Keep windows closed on high pollen count days
  • Use barrier creams (such as Haymax) around nostrils and eyes

5. Self-Care

Listen to your body during symptomatic periods. Reducing activities and prioritising rest allows the immune system to function at its best. Your body is working hard; support it.
